QUARTZ Quartz is a form of silicone dioxide. Clear quartz is also referred to as rock crystal. The name “quartz” derives from the Greek word for “ice.” In Japan it is held in high regard as a symbol of purity and patience. Native Amercian Indians believed that entities lived within the crystals and therefore during rituals presented offerings to them. It is said that when the Crusaders returned for the Holy Lands some of them returned with crystal spheres that possessed magical powers. AMETHYST This beautiful gem is a variety of quartz (Silicon dioxide) and gains its purple appearance due to its iron content. It is mined mainly in Brazil, Uruguay and the U. S. A. It was used as a decorative stone before 25’000 B.C and was popular with the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans and has graced royal crowns and Bishops’ rings. Many heart shaped amethysts have been discovered in the tombs of Pharaohs. To them the heart was the “seat of life” and as yet it is unknown what “paranormal” qualities they believed the stone to hold. A 16th century French verse by Carravaggio tells how Bacchus, the god of wine, declared in a rage that the next person he met would be eaten by tigers. This turned out to be the beautiful maiden called Amethyst. The goddess Diana quickly turned Amethyst into a white stone so that she may be saved. Bacchus regretted his anger and poured red wine over the stone as an offering to Diana, so turning the stone purple. In the 15th century it was used to make drinking vessels which gave water the appearance of wine, thus an non intoxicating drink! It was often worn by sailors as it is the stone of the god Neptune and it was believed that if worn it would always guide them safely home.
