Pearl is derived from the Latin word perula which means “sea shell.” This beautiful jewel is made from calcium carbonate, a second type of calcium carbonate known as conciolin and argonite. The Chinese use to tell a story which said that pearls fell from the sky when dragons were fighting in the heavens. In Hindu beliefs it is associated with the moon and pearls represent lovers whilst in India it is seen as a stone of immortality. The Chinese began cultivating pearls in the thirteenth century and early on some pearl makers began inserting small figurines inside shells. HEMATITE Hematite is a form of iron oxide and its name is derived from the Greek word for blood. This is due to the fact that in powered form in takes on the colour of its name sake. It was believed to be the sacred blood of Mother Earth and when ground, the red pigment was used for adornment in sacred rituals. The oldest hematite mines are found in South Africa and were originally dug out with picks made of wood or bone. Once the mine was exhausted is was refilled to restore the land to its natural state. JADE (NEPHRITE)
Nephrite Jade is offered referred to as New Zealand Jade. The Maoris carved figures from it to represent ancestral spirits and considered it to be a powerful talisman. It was held in high regard by the Aztec, Olmec and Toltec people and after the Spanish conquest of South America it was introduced into Europe by the Conquistadors. The Spaniards called it piedra de ijada, meaning “hip stone” as they had learnt from the natives that it was used for kidney problems.

"Peace Jade" is actually a conglomerate rock and is comprised of Serpentine, Pink Stichtite and White Quartz. It is found in China and all its colours and patterns make it a truly beautiful stone. It ranges from pale to mid-green and includes creamy white marbling with a hint of lilac/pink.
Serpentine is a hydrous silicate mineral and was held in high regard by the Minoan civilization of Crete from 3000BC to 1100BC. The light green variety is also said to have been one of the stones in the breastplate of the High Priest.
Stichtite is found in Tasmania, the U.S.A, Canada and South Africa. It can also be found as a conglomerate rock, growing in conjunction with serpentine, as this pink gem is actually a variety a serpentine.

Jet is a type of fossilized wood which is also known as lignite coal. It has a high carbon content and may sometimes contain flecks of pyrite (fools gold). It is usually found in rocks situated near coastal regions as it is formed from driftwood and other waterlogged plant materials. Jet is also found in peat. Since prehistoric times it has been held in high regard. In the first century AD the Romans carved it into bangles and some of the jet used actually origninated in Whitby. The name is derived from the Persian word Lazuward which means blue. In ancient Egypt it was known as Chesbet and was sacred to the goddess Maat.
