CARNELIAN

Carnelain is a variety of quartz which is known as chalcedony.  It name derives from the Latin word carnis which means flesh.  In the ancient world it was highly valued in Egypt, India and Arabia.  In Egypt it was used as an amulet for protecting the living and the dead.  It was associated with the goddess Isis and was placed on the throat of a mummy to provide protection on the journey to the spirit world and to ensure rebirth.  It was often carved into the Eye of Horus which was a popular talisman and this was believed to guard against evil.  In the Book of Exodus it is referred to under the name odem.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Carnelian is considered a protective stone and the Egyptians believed that it protected the soul in the afterlife.  It promotes creativity, builds confidence and foster courage.  this gem bestows clarity and is a powerful alley to those who procrastinate or are unable to make decisions easily.  For gentle souls it provides them with self belief in order to manifest their deepest desires by putting their thoughts into action and watching the fruits of the labour develop.  Carnelian reminds us to treat our body as a temple and realize that we are spiritual beings, yet we must not neglect the physical vehicle which we inhabit.  This then strengthens our connection to the source and therefore results in spiritual and physical wellbeing.  It is an excellent stone for clearing away negative thoughts and habits.  In healing it has been used to heal the sexual organs.
